Example

A 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) person weighing 165 lb (75 kg) has a BMI of 24.5, in the healthy range; the healthy weight range for that height runs from about 125 to 168 lb.

Method and formula

BMI = weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. Categories follow the WHO cut-offs: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and above obesity.

The healthy range is the weight that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.

Limits

  • BMI ignores body composition: muscular people score high without excess fat.
  • Cut-offs are adult, population-level thresholds; they do not apply to children, pregnancy or older adults in the same way.
  • It is a screening number, not a diagnosis.

FAQ

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

No. Muscle is denser than fat, so lifters and athletes often read as overweight. A body fat estimate or waist measurement tells you more.

What is a healthy BMI?

Between 18.5 and 24.9 for adults according to the WHO. Where you sit in that range matters less than your body fat, fitness and habits.

Should I lose weight if my BMI is 26?

Not automatically. Look at body fat, waist size, blood markers and how you train. A coach or doctor can help you decide.
